learning to walk as Jesus walked

A Simple Rule of Life

Throughout the centuries, groups of people that have desired to live their life for God have lived by what has been called a “Rule of Life” (more on the rule of life here and here.) Basically, a rule of life can be thought of as a kind of rhythm for daily living, or perhaps the pillars or tripod that help you to build your life around Christ.

The point of a Christian Rule of Life is to train us to not be "conformed to the pattern of this world", but to be "conformed to Christ".

Don’t let the name “rule” throw you off though! This isn’t about being ritualistic and legalistic, but it is about living a disciplined life of training. Really, if we think about it, we all already live by a rule of life. We have those daily rhythms that determine how we spend our time, energy, and where we put our focus. So, the point of a Christian Rule of Life is to train us to not be “conformed to the pattern of this world”, but to be “conformed to Christ”.

As I’ve been thinking about this, the following three things have surfaced as a possible Rule of Life “tripod”:

  1. Prayer – an ongoing conversation with God that not only roots our day (by beginning and ending our day with him), but also weaves throughout it as we are in constant conversation with him
  2. Scripture – not just a quick reading, but an immersion in Scripture that cleanses and transforms us as we read, study, meditate, memorize, and live it
  3. Service – following the example of Jesus, the one who came not to be served but to serve

What might our daily life look like if we built it on these three simple things? Is this tripod missing anything to you? How could you begin to shape your daily living around these three things?

  • @John Arnold, glad you found the site! I really like your idea of how a rule of life is like a grocery list, thanks!
  • I love the simplicity of this rule of life. To me having a rule of life is something akin to bringing a list with you to the grocery store. Without a shopping list we tend to pick up things we don't need and forget some of what is truly necessary. A lot of energy is expended without necessarily having the right things to show for it. A rule of life sends us into the day with parameters for our day that have spiritual merit.

Thanks for the post. I just discovered your blog and look forward to exploring it a bit.

I agree with Becca, a great way to start my day- with a goal in mind. I also enjoy the visualization of a tripod- quite interesting analogy since tripod legs all balance together for a centered life.
