Living the Resurrection
Filed under Reflections by Paul at 2:23 pm on Apr 02 2008
As you know, we just celebrated Easter - the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus is alive!
Jesus’ resurrection has strong implications for those that believe in Him:
"If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin- because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.
Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.
In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace."
we will also live with him…
count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus…
as those who have been brought from death to life…
What great words! The Christian life is about LIFE!
Think about it. If you were to DIE and then be brought back to LIFE, you would live the rest of your life quite differently! In this case, we are have died to sin and our old sinful ways, therefore the new life we have been given should look a lot different! That doesn’t mean that we won’t have temptation to sin or that we will never stumble, it does mean though that we are not "slaves" to sin - we have a choice in the matter. As those who are now ALIVE we are called to live a life of righteousness. As Paul says here, "sin is not you master", God is now.
This is what it means to "live the resurrection" in my opinion. We have been brought from death to life and our lives now have a different purpose, drive, focus, and master. To live the resurrection means to not simply be "raised" just to go back to the old way of death, but to now offer yourself to God as instruments of righteousness. Imagine how different life would look!
Jesus died and he was resurrected and those that believe in him as Savior share in his resurrection and have been given new "resurrected" life. Life will never be the same.
What does it mean to you to "live the resurrection"? What do Paul’s words here in Romans mean to your life?
