Idea Lab: A Spiritual Retreat

Filed under Idea Lab by Paul at 8:46 pm on Sep 05 2006

Idea:  A weekend retreat focused on silence, solitude, & prayer in a peaceful setting away from the hustle and busyness of life.

I’m currently looking into possible locations and am thinking about sometime in the fall (beautiful colors, crisp cool air).

This would also coincide with the upcoming Sunday school class on spiritual disciplines.

Any thoughts?

    Carlisle is a possibility…..

Remember our lakeside service of contemplation, worship and sharing at the Wesleyan Camp in Maryland? That was a moving experience for me. The brilliant rays of the sun could be distinctly observed piercing the air and striking the lake causing a glistening diamond-like dance on the water. It only lasted so long as the sun moved higher in the sky. So, are some of our moments with God –one of a kind and we must take advantage of them whether the time is opportune or not because nothing stays the same for long. God has many moments like that one on an early Saturday morning around the lake –will we plan for those moments — will we watch for them –experience them? It’s all up to us –sometimes the early bird really does get the “worm.”

Carlisle seems so far away… how about Poconos if you’re willing to go three hours?

How about starting with a lake close by? Remember our lakeside service of contemplation, worship and sharing at the Wesleyan Camp in Maryland? That was a moving experience for me. I was also considering the Weslyan Camp in Denton. Nearby and very nice surroundings. I actually called them the other day to get some info.

Killens Pond has cabins that can be rented but best of all long winding wooded trails to wander on, get lost in and talk with God all the way. My creator often speaks to me the most profound thoughts in the simplest “piece of nature” if my heart is truly searching.

Hmmm. I forgot about Killens. Definitely another possibility!

Here’s another question: 2 day overnight or 1 long day?

definitely 2 days-overnight. It can take some time to peel off layers of distraction.

I agree with Andrea, Killen’s Pond Cabins are very nice and the area is very restful and it’s closeby..
I have enjoyed the cabins and the pond..
Yes, overnight would be best. Time to get away from the hustle bustle of daily living…

Yes! Absolutely! I’ve been thinking about this very thing myself. My heart longs for the mountains but I’m okay with the nearby Killen’s Pond!

Sorry I haven’t mentioned this lately. I’m thinking possibly this fall for a retreat. In the meantime, I hope to do a little write up on how to have your own personal retreat. Stay tuned…
