Stop Trying, Start Training Series: Discipline of Simplicity
“No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” – Luke 12:15 We live in a world that is far from simple. However, amidst the chaos of modern life, Jesus invites into the freedom of simplicity. In this post, we will take a look at the discipline of simplicity and how … Continue reading

The right form, energizing music, and all the confidence I could muster up just wasn’t enough. What I lacked was the hours of dedicated training. Working my way up from lighter weights to heavier ones; training my body and exercising my muscles. It’s quite the same when it comes to our discipleship. (If you aren’t familiar with that term, discipleship, it is the lifelong life encompassing process of being … Continue reading
Book Review: The Life You’ve Always Wanted
I often recommend this book to people interested in learning how to grow spiritually, so I thought a little review might be of some use. The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg is an easy to read yet extremely insightful book on the Christian life. The author himself describes it as Dallas for Dummies (referencing Dallas Willard) as the focus of the book is the spiritual disciplines, something Willard often writes about. Full of real life examples and hilarious stories, Ortberg not only makes you laugh but he makes you think. This is not a book that should simply … Continue reading
Fasting
On Jan. 1, Calvary Assembly of God began its annual church wide 40 day fast. With that in mind, here are some thoughts on the practice of fasting. There are two main categories of spiritual disciplines – disciplines of engaging and disciplines of abstaining. The practice of fasting is a discipline of abstaining. Fasting can be defined as “the voluntary abstention from an otherwise normal function – most often eating – for the sake of intense spiritual activity.” (from the Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible) Right before Jesus launched into his 3 years of intense ministry, He spent 40 days fasting … Continue reading
