Doing Life Together with Jesus

Posted by Paul

This is from a short devotional I gave at a recent ministry leadership meeting
What does it mean to “do life together with Jesus”? What does it mean for the individual and what does it mean for ministry?

1 Thessalonians 2:8 says:
“So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not [...]

Defining Discipleship

Posted by Paul

How do you “define” discipleship?
At a recent retreat we (the ministry team at Calvary) came up with this working definition for discipleship as we move forward into the new year and into changing times:
Discipleship - Doing Life Together With Jesus.
Simple, yet broad.
Here is how we break it down:
Doing - Discipleship is active, not passive.
Life - [...]

The Call

Posted by Paul

Think about it. Jesus’ call to be his disciples is not a call to the comfortable, mundane, status quo, or mediocre. No, his call is quite different. Jesus calls us into a life of:

- spontaneity and living by the Spirit (John 3:8)
- radical service (John 13:14-17)
- radical [...]

The Wind of the Spirit

Posted by Paul

John 3:8 says,
“The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
Jesus said this to Nicodemus, a Pharisee who curiously came to Jesus in the secret of the night, as He was telling [...]

Be Somebody

Posted by Paul

While reading Invitation to a Journey: A Road Map for Spiritual Formation I came across this quote by C.S. Lewis which I have heard before:
Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part of you that chooses, into something a little different from what it was before.  And [...]

Answered Prayer

Posted by Paul

At the close of Psalm 13 David writes (from The Message translation)
I’ve thrown myself headlong into your arms
I’m celebrating your rescue.
I’m singing at the top of my lungs,
I’m so full of answered prayers.
This is a great passage to meditate on and think about the answered prayers in our own lives. Take some time and [...]
